About Rebecca
Rebecca Stevens is a Life After Birth® trained psychotherapist. She has a Masters degree in counseling psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Her areas of expertise and focus include disordered eating recovery and relapse, pregnancy, and postpartum depression with a depth psychology perspective. In addition, this mother of two has a background in comedy and a passion for helping mothers to be and their partners throughout all stages of motherhood.
She works with women and couples facing all phases of parenthood, from conception and pregnancy through birth and beyond. The transition to motherhood is a profound shift in identity. Mothers and couples often need guidance and support to navigate their new world. Life after having a baby can be overwhelming, chaotic, and unmanageable, and so much of the emotional reality of motherhood is avoided in day-to-day conversation because of shame, fear, or embarrassment.
Rebecca works with mothers and mothers-to-be to normalize common and often unspoken issues, such as rage, depression, anxiety, loneliness, disordered eating and body dysmorphia, and the work/motherhood balance. She strives to help women find their voices, lessen their pain, and embrace their new identities. With couples, she focuses on the needs to validate, be present with, and to cherish each other during this new explosion within the partnership.
Individual Therapy
Sometimes there are more sensitive issues that warrant a deeper dive 1:1 with a mental health professional. All Life After Birth® Psychotherapists are trained in perinatal (pregnancy + postpartum) issues, which can help expectant + new parents navigate challenges that include, but are not limited to: birth complications/trauma; health issues with baby including time spent in the NICU; experience with Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs); discord with partner and/or other relationships; breastfeeding issues; identity and/or body image issues; grief and loss issues.
Couples Therapy
The change in dynamics in your relationship after the birth of a child or children can benefit from the guidance of a Marriage and Family Therapist who has a specialty in treating the perinatal (pregnancy + postpartum) period. MFTs can help normalize what can happen in a partnership when you become parents, work with you to improve communication, and provide tools and resources to set you up for success as a couple.
GroupTherapy
These process-oriented support circles run by Masters-level perinatal mental health professionals tend to the birthing person. It is vital to have a safe place to make sense of your initiation or re-entry into parenthood. After becoming a parent, one typically hits the ground running and does not often take the time to acknowledge their metamorphosis. These groups are like a counterpart to mommy & me classes, which are typically more didactic in nature and focus on the child—their development, sleeping and schedules, etc. These practical matters do come up in our discussions, yet these circles take deep dives into subjects surrounding the drastic transformation from maiden to mother.
